How to Remove Wine Bottle Labels Without Tearing Them

How to Remove Wine Bottle Labels Without Tearing Them

Many wine lovers like to save the label from a memorable bottle. It might remind you of a winery visit, a special dinner, or a wine discovered while travelling.

But removing a wine label from a bottle can be frustrating. Labels often tear as they are lifted from the glass, especially when the paper is thin or delicate.

The key is using a method that supports the label while it is being removed.

How wine label removers work

Wine label remover sheets are designed specifically for lifting the printed label from the bottle.

A clear adhesive sheet is placed over the label and rubbed firmly across the surface. The remover sheet adheres to the printed surface of the wine label.

When the sheet is peeled back, it lifts the printed portion of the label away from the bottle.

The label remover does not dissolve or release the bottle adhesive. Instead, it removes the printed label layer while leaving paper residue and the original adhesive on the bottle.

Because the remover sheet supports the label during removal, the label can be lifted without the paper collapsing or falling apart.

Basic steps for removing a wine label

  1. Make sure the bottle and label are dry.

  2. Place the label remover sheet directly over the wine label.

  3. Rub firmly across the entire surface so the sheet bonds to the label.

  4. Lift one corner and slowly peel the sheet back from the bottle.

Often the label will lift off cleanly in one piece but sometimes they don't.

What to expect during removal

Wine labels vary widely in paper thickness and construction, so it is important to know that some labels may begin to tear as they lift from the bottle. This is normal and happens with certain types of paper labels.

The advantage of using a label remover sheet is that small tears can usually be corrected during the removal process.

If the label begins to tear

  1. Place the remover sheet back over the label.

  2. Carefully line up the torn edges of the paper.

  3. Rub firmly across the surface again so the adhesive sheet bonds to the label.

  4. Start peeling again from a different edge or direction.

Because the sheet is clear and adhesive, it holds the paper together and lifts the remaining section of the label.

Once removed, the sheet effectively laminates the label, strengthening it and helping the tear disappear.

See our Tips & Tricks in the video below - Removing difficult labels section and on our How to Remove Wine Bottle Labels page

When a label begins to tear, place remover back down onto wine label, lining up edges of the tear, and concentrate on rubbing the printed label still left on the bottle.  Now try peeling the label from a different angle. Very often, that part of the label will come off completely when peeled from a different corner or side.

Preserving the label

Once removed, the laminated label can be stored easily.

Many collectors place their labels into wine journals or label albums where they record tasting notes, wineries visited, and memorable bottles discovered along the way.

Over time these labels become a visual record of wines enjoyed, places explored, and moments shared.

Keeping your wine labels as a record of the wines you love

Once the label has been removed and protected by the label remover sheet, it becomes a lasting keepsake from the bottle.

Many wine lovers enjoy building a collection of labels as a way to remember the wines they’ve discovered, the wineries they’ve visited, and the occasions when special bottles were opened.

A wine label journal provides a simple way to organise those memories. Labels can be placed alongside tasting notes, the winery name, the region, and any details you’d like to remember about the wine.

Over time, the journal becomes a personal record of your wine journey — the places you’ve travelled, the wines you’ve enjoyed, and the moments shared along the way.
